The Rich History of
Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church
Through God’s grace and His Blessings, Mt. Olive commemorated our 100th (Centennial) Anniversary in 2007, celebrating the entire year with special events and activities.
Established in 1907, Mt. Olive is the first and the oldest African-American Baptist Church in Flint and Genesee County. During the 2007 year-long celebration, an historical plaque was purchased and dedicated to recapping Mt. Olive’s historical past. It is located in the horseshoe courtyard, near the North entrance.
Mt. Olive produced a historical documentary DVD, “This Far by Faith,” narrated by Mt. Olive members. The documentary recalls Mt. Olive history in a dramatic, yet humorous manner. “This Far by Faith” is a 60-Minute historic documentary DVD that is available for purchase.
New Members are welcome to join the Historic Ministry that preserves Mt. Olive history through articles, programs, minutes, documents, and audio-visual media.
Rev. Jevon Q. Catlett
Pastor
Rev. Jevon Q. Catlett, originally from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, became a licensed minister in 2003 and was ordained in 2009. He and wife Symone (Mays) have three children.
“God has indeed proved himself again. I am most thankful for what God has already done in the life of Mt. Olive. This church has an amazing history and has had great leaders in the past. I am happy, excited and grateful to join Mt. Olive as pastor to lead, learn and grow with them as well as within the community,” said Rev. Catlett regarding his installation.
Prior to accepting the call to Mt. Olive in September of 2018, Rev. Catlett served for four years as Senior Pastor at Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church located in Birmingham, Alabama. Prior to that, he served two years as Senior Pastor at Greater Hope Baptist Church in Murray, Kentucky.
Rev. Catlett graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and a minor in Theology from Lane College, Jackson, Tennessee. While attending Lane, Rev. Catlett served as vice-president of the Ministerial Alliance. He is currently enrolled at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, pursuing his Master of Theology Studies Degree.
At the age of 13, Rev. Catlett felt God’s calling to preach. He joined the St. Bethlehem Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Roland Butler, Jr., where he preached his first sermon.
Rev. Catlett succeeds Rev. Dr. Major A. Stewart, who served Mt. Olive from 2010-2017.
